Spinal schwannoma with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage: a diagnostic challenge.

چکیده
We report a case of spinal intradural schwannoma presenting with intracranial subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography studies were negative, but MR imaging of the spine revealed a large hemorrhagic tumor in the thoraco-lumbar junction. The tumor was misdiagnosed as ependymoma of the conus medullaris. This case illustrates the importance of a high index of suspicion for spinal disease in angiographically-negative subarachnoid hemorrhage and pitfalls in MR diagnosis of thoraco-lumbar tumors.

Giant Hemorrhagic Cervical Schwannoma in a Young Woman with Acute Quadriparesis: Case Report
Background: Schwannomas are the most common extramedullary spinal tumors. The acute hemorrhagic onset of a spinal schwannoma is a rare occurrence. Case report: We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who presents with acute onset of quadriparesis due to a hemorrhagic intradural schwannoma. The tumor arose from left C1-C2 roots and extended downward from C1 to C5 vertebral levels. An emergency...
متن کاملSpinal subarachnoid hemorrhage attributable to schwannoma of the cauda equina.
BACKGROUND Cauda equina syndrome occurring as a result of spontaneous spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) from a spinal tumor is reported to be rare. CASE DESCRIPTION A 28-year-old woman presented at our clinic with a history of severe back pain for 10 days, progressive paraparesis, and urinary retention. Her physical examination revealed a mass located intradurally at the level of L1-2 and ...
متن کاملSpinal cord ependymoma presenting as acute paraplegia and subarachnoid hemorrhage: a case report and review of literature
Acute paraplegia is a rare presentation for a spinal cord ependymoma. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) due to spinal ependymoma is also very rare. We report a 32-year-old woman who presented with acute paraplegia and typical clinical signs of SAH with normal cerebral angiography, and further diagnostic work-up revealed an spinal cord ependymoma as the source of the hemorrhage. There is evidence th...
متن کاملEvaluation and Management of Spinal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in a Patient with Lupus Vasculitis
BACKGROUND Isolated spinal artery subarachnoid hemorrhage is a rare occurrence in the general population, but occurs more commonly as one of many neurologic sequela of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The etiology of a neurologic deficit in an SLE patient is often multifactorial. Comorbid conditions, such as antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, predispose to stroke. Other diagnoses, including...
متن کاملSpinal subarachnoid haemorrhage presenting as spinal block without meningism.
A case of spinal subarachnoid haemorrhage with progressive spinal cord compression and without any evidence of meningism is described. Spinal block was demonstrated by myelography and computerized tomography and surgical decompression of the subarachnoid blood clot resulted in almost complete recovery. A diagnosis of spinal subarachnoid haemorrhage should be considered in any patient who presen...
